Beanfield Primary

Students in Mr Farthing’s and Miss Wallis’ class have been taking part in ‘Corby Reads with PfS’ today. They have been working with Miss Letts, Mrs Weedon and Ryan Lovell, the football coach from Rushden and Diamonds FC. Rob Jones, the centre manager from the Diamonds Study Centre also dropped in. Throughout the day they have taken part in literacy activities based around sport.

1st lesson (Mr Farthing’s class) : Matching sports terms and definitions. This was very hard with random rugby/cricket words such as ‘googly’, ‘flanker’, ’slip’ and ‘lineout’ but the pairs managed it by examining the key words closely to see if they gave any clues.

2nd lesson: (Mr Farthing’s class):  Sports poetry: looking at sports poems and discussing rythm, sports terminology and whether we liked them or not and why. Students had a go at writing their own poems: acrostics and then after watching cricket DVD footage, 5 senses poems.  There was some great creative writing with lots of attention given to detail of sound and hearing.

3rd lesson: (Miss Wallis’ class): team/player anagrams: this was a competition to see who could find the most words. The record was 27! Next came ‘reading for a purpose’ with ‘Bend it liked Beckham’ and reading skills such as shared reading, reading aloud, analysing the text, characters and dialogue, predicting, emotionally engaging, picturing and evaluating. The DVd clip proved very popular and we talked about facial expressions and whether our ideas about the characters were portrayed in the film.

4th lesson: after some ‘Relax kids’ with Mrs Weedon as a ‘brainbreak’, the class combined literacy and numeracy in a programme trail, using Northampton Town Football Club’s programmes.

5th lesson ICT:  newspaper headlines and key words. After discussing the style and conventions of sports reporting, the group worked in pairs to create a sports article around a headline. They had to include 6 key words (high frequency/’golden boot’) in their work and add images. We had some exciting, action-packed articles full of football vocabulary, which showed off the extent of the children’s sports knowledge.

6th lesson ICT: a quick speaking game of ‘click clacks’ then on to researching player profiles on the internet. The class created profile templates and refined their search skills looking for facts around DOB, previous teams, family, goals scored, place of birth and so on. They used powerpoint and added images and changed the format.
