Project Proposal
Aims
• To run four PfS “taster” days in Corby schools
• To introduce Corby schools to Northants Study Centres Playing for Success ethos, activities and ideas to engage and motivate primary and secondary students.
• To build on the work of ‘Corby Reads’ (Corby Learning Partnership) and combine with PfS engagement activities to enthuse children’s reading.
• To improve key skills (with a particular focus on reading) through using sport based literacy activities.
• To improve confidence and self-esteem.
Taster days
• To be delivered between February half term and Easter 2009 to one secondary school and three primary schools in the Kingswood cluster.
• In primary schools sessions to be offered to a whole class of either year 5 or year 6 students.
• In secondary school sessions to be offered to a group of fifteen students from either year 7 or year 8.
Staffing
• AL to plan, prepare and deliver all lessons assisted by HW.
• AL to link with the sports clubs to book community sports coaches for practical sessions
• Schools to provide a member of staff to work alongside AL in all lessons in order to get a taste of reading-related PfS activities.
• Key staff members need to be invited to experience the taster days in order that they can feed back on the pilot and contribute to discussions about developing future joint work with Corby Reads.
Curriculum
• See Scheme of Work and example days. Learning objectives stated, as well as mapped against national curriculum objectives.
Coaching
• AL to liaise with either local club coach/sports club coach to visit the school. They will supply school with risk assessment, CRB document, scheme of work/training, equipment.
• School to provide staff support to coach.
Evaluation
• Students to complete a Corby Learning Partnership/PfS evaluation form at the end of the day.
• Feedback can also be given through the Study Centres blog and the Learning Platform.
• School staff, NSC staff and Corby Learning Partnership staff to meet after the four days have been delivered to evaluate and consider next steps.
